I am inspired by the contradiction of order/disorder, form, and poetry that I find in natural and man-made landscapes, both in the flatness and line of the eastern shore of Maryland and the quiet countryside of the Dordogne in France. There is an inherent richness in these subjects to be explored in-tellectually and emotionally. In each case I like to understand the spirit of the place, first spontaneously through sketches and watercolors, and then in a more ordered way in oil paintings. A variety of printmaking techniques also allows me to explore the playful qualities of the subject.
