Fifteen years as an architect gave me a strong understanding of architectural form and design. An additional twenty years of architectural illustration has allowed me to better understand how space is defined, modified and vitalized by light and the environment. It is this foundation that I build on as I expand my interests more toward the natural environment as well as reinterpreting the urbanscape with my sketches and paintings.
I am finding that plein air and fine art painting is a new challenge and allows me to experiment with a style that is looser and more emotional than was possible with renderings. Capturing the sense of place and a moment in time has become more important in my work than recording precise detail and accuracy and is a direction that I wish to continue to explore with my artwork.
